Nigerian President, Muhammad Buhari has granted a presidential pardon to 2,600 inmates of Correctional Centres nationwide.

Rauf Aregbeshola, the Minister of Interior, made this known while addressing a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.
70 of the inmates would be released from Kuje maximum custodial centre, Aregbeshola stated.

He further stated that this is going to be continuous as the committee will continue to meet and advice the Presidency after considering those deserving the Presidential Pardon.

“After the release of the first phase, the committee will continue to meet regularly to consider those who deserve the benefit,” Aregbeshola said.

The Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, also said the UN had advised the Member States to reduce the number of inmates in custodial centres, because of the social distancing policy aimed at containing the spread of Coronavirus.

Malami stated that the process of selecting the inmates deserving the pardon started in 2018 and described the launch of the 2020 presidential pardon as historic.

He further warned the beneficiaries of the pardon to desist from crimes, urging the community to receive them without stigmatisation.

He lamented that 70 per cent of inmates in Nigeria’s Correctional Centres that were released were awaiting trial.
So far Nigeria’s Correctional Centres had not recorded any case of COVID-19, Ja’afaru Ahmed, the Controller-General of NCOs stated.

He said that the 2020 presidential pardon would go a long way in reducing the number of inmates in the service nationwide.
