Lassa Fever: Pregnant woman dies in Enugu, as Anambra confirms case

A pregnant woman have been confirmed to have died of the deadly Lassa Fever by the Government of Enugu State.
The woman died at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Utuku-Ozalla which brought the deaths from Lassa fever to two.

Dr Ifeanyi Agujiobi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, announced the death of the pregnant woman who died on Thursday night during a joint press briefing at the state Secretariat. 

He said the case involved a 24-year-old pregnant woman.

Whereas the first death occured at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, involving a 75-year-old woman.
Out of six suspected cases of Lassa fever, three have been confirmed while two have died according to Dr Agujiobi.
Dr Agujiobi reported that the third victim  survived the attack and responding to treatment.

She's said to be a female corps member who just returned from Benue State.

The Permenent secrecary assured assured the public that the Lassa fever virus has been under control since the first reported case in January.

He explained that the pregnant woman who died from the disease was due to late reporting to health facilities.
Meanwhile, Chukwu Emeka Odumegwu University Teaching hospital have confirmed a lassa fever case.

The management said the case was first reported at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Medical center before the patient was moved to the teaching hospital for confirmation.

This was stated in a press release signed by the Acting CMAC, Dr Ifeanyichukwu Ezebialu.
He said the patient have been moved Abakiliki.

"The state emergency response team of the Ministry of health who has been in the know of the all along has moved the patient to Abakiliki and necessary decontamination done in the ward where the patient was nursed"

The state emergency response team have also announced an awereness and sensitization program on lassa fever slated to hold on Monday, 3rd February.
